
New Jersey Federation of Music Clubs Piano Competition

The NJFMC holds an annual competition for pianists (9 - 18 years old).

Students are required to perform two contrasting works by memory.

To be eligible, teachers must be members of the NJFMC as a junior counselor. Entrants must have studied with the same NJFMC affiliated club member for 4 months preceding the contest, if the former teacher is also a member of the NJFMC or affiliated club.

Below are the levels and time allocations for the piano competition:

Level 1 (9 to 11 year olds – 8 minutes)

Level 2 (12 to 13 year olds – 10 minutes)

Level 3 (14 to 15 year olds – 12 minutes)

Level 4 (16 to 18 year olds – 15 minutes)

All piano entrants must play 2 contrasting selections. (Please identify works by Opus #, Key, K#, movement, Well Tempered Clavier Book #, etc.)

The 2021 Piano Competition will be held in person. The deadline to register online is October 15, 2021. Teachers will have to fill out an online form where they can enter each student, level, and their selections.

Judges comments will be emailed in PDF format to teachers.

We expect contestants to dress neatly: no sneakers, jeans, miniskirts or bare midriffs. Performers at the Winners’ Concert should dress as for a public performance.

Winners will be notified through their teachers by November 29. The decisions of the judges are final. All winners will perform one of their selections at the Winners’ Concert, (the piece will be chosen by the judges and the Chairperson.) Any winner who is unable to perform at the concert will receive a certificate, but not the monetary award.

- The NJFMC holds an annual competition for vocalists (9 - 18) years old.
- Students are required to perform two contrasting works by memory.
- To be eligible teachers must be members of the NJFMC as a junior counselor. Entrants must have studied with the same NJFMC affiliated club member for 4 months preceding the contest, if the former teacher is also a member of the NJFMC or affiliated club.

Below are the levels and time allocations for the vocal competition:

Level 1 (9 to 11 year olds - 8 minutes)

Level 2 (12 to 13 years old - 9 minutes)

Level 3 (14 to 15 year olds - 10 minutes)

Level 4 (16 to 18 year olds - 12 minutes)
- Vocalists must perform one Art Song (foreign language) and one Musical Theater piece.
- We accept transcriptions only if they are part of the standard repertoire.
- This year's 2021 Vocal Competition will be held through video submission only.
- We will not be holding in person auditions due to the delta variant with the coronavirus pandemic.
- The deadline to register online is October 15, 2021. Teachers will have to fill out an online form where they can enter each student, level, and their selections. Teacher registration forms will not be accepted without a payment for the entire total for the issued invoice.
- Judges comments will be emailed in PDF format to teachers.
- Online Video Submissions are due on November 14, 2021 through the Online Video Submissions form. Teachers are expected to collect unlisted YouTube video links of their students' performances from the student or parent and submit them following the instructions on the registration form.
- Vocal students must be accompanied by piano accompanist or a piano instrumental track for this year only. A capella singing is not allowed.
- We expect contestants to dress neatly: no sneakers, jeans, miniskirts or bare midriffs. Performers at the Winners’ Concert should dress as for a public performance.
- Winners will be notified through their teachers by November 23. The decisions of the judges are final. All winners will perform one of their selections at the Winners’ Concert, (the piece will be chosen by the judges and the Chairperson.) The 2021 Winners Concert will be held virtually. Awards will be distributed as an "awards pick-up" which will be announced at a later date. Any winner who is unable to perform at the concert will receive a certificate, but not the monetary award.
